"I want to say something. You all pay attention! God has shown you today
that He is waiting on us to change our thinking and follow His way. We are
all sinners and deserve death just like Isaac, but God is holding up the
knife waiting for us. What will we do? Will we listen to Him and follow His
way or we will just die? Each of you should decide."

Epox said this after hearing teaching on Abraham and Isaac. Gary and his
son, Caleb, acted out Abraham's obedience to God's command to sacrifice his
son, then God providing a substitutionary lamb. It was very powerful! Many
people were moved to tears as they saw acted out before them what the price
of sin is, and Abraham's passion to obey God. When the teaching finished,
Musave said, "We have all just seen that drama, and here's what I think.
Just as Isaac had his hands and legs bound up waiting for death, so we are
bound to sin and there is nothing we can do. But God provided that lamb that
was caught by its horns so that it would be an acceptable sacrifice in
Isaac's place. I think the "kidaak amna" will do this kind of work. Because
God said the kidaak amna will save us from sin and Satan." We have coined
the term "kidaak amna", meaning "the One who saves". Our hearts are full to
overflowing as we see them truly embracing the TRUTH, and we praise GOD for
what HE is doing in their hearts! I believe we are witnessing the beginning
of the birth of something beautiful, something for the angels to rejoice
over! Everyone is still coming every day. They are faithfully listening to
the tapes (and making sure their neighbors are too!) and they're reading the
summary sheets that we hand out every day. They are seeing that GOD ALONE
is worthy of their praise! We are all helpless in our sin and desperately
in need of Kidaak Amna! Praise God!

Literacy in Dinangat is going great. This week we just finished another
class taught completely by two Dinangat teachers. It has been awesome to
see the people get excited about reading in their own language. Please pray
that their fire for wanting to read Gods word would continue.

Another class has been going simultaneously to the one that just finished.
It should be finished mid April. We will also begin another class on March
10th.

The 4 Literacy teachers are also writing stories from their history, funny
stories and other things that interest them. We as a team provided them
with a little computer/typewriter that they write on, then we turn them into
little booklets for the Dinangat library.

Each morning Monday through Friday, Lucas or one of his brothers blows on
this conk shell to let everyone know its time for the teaching. The first
conk shell sounds at around 5:45 in the morning, to make sure everyone is
awake, then it blows again around 6:30 to tell everyone that its getting
close. Then the last one at 7:15 telling everyone that its time to come to
the teaching spot.

We also hear it every afternoon, including the weekends, around 5:30 PM
signaling everyone that they can go to whatever house is closest to them so
they can review the lessons with tapes and printed lesson summaries.

understands, then opens it up for any other questions that the people might
have. It's been exciting to hear some of the questions they are asking.

Alayna is doing great! Gowing like a weed in typical Markley fashion! She continually charms us everyday with her smiles and attempts to master the use of her hands.

Jordan "graduated" from 1st grade this year. At our little graduation party for all the kids on our team, he presented his project on the solar system that he worked on. Jordan has done great, and we are so proud of him for his good work this year in spite of med-evacs, teacher changes and, in general, a year of constant upheaval!

Judah did another year of preschool and accedentally learned how to read. His eagerness to learn was so great that he was determined to do an hour of school everyday, even though it was completely optional for him. We had a great time this year, and he loves to learn.

The first Dinangat literacy class is functioning full steam ahead! There are 15 students and most of them are doing great. There are a few who have had no schooling whatsoever before that are really struggling, please pray that these guys don't give up. We are not sure if there are learning disabilities involved, or they just simply need more time. So please pray for wisdom for us as well. But there are some students doing so great, they are even starting to show some potential future teacher qualities, so that's exciting! Lord willing, everyone will graduate as Dinangat readers this November! Gary and Jeremiah are teaching right now, and are already allowing others to assist so that we can hand over the teaching of this class to the Dinangat's as soon as possible.

Dear Family and Friends!

We are in Lae city right now for a little reprieve from bush life! We are doing great, the Lord has been so Faithful! Keeping us healthy, keeping the work moving, steadfastly LOVING our family and meeting our needs above and beyone what we could have imagined.

Of course, there have been those all-important character-building "tough times", too. Isn't it comforting to know that our Heavenly Father loves us too much to leave us the way we are? Instead, He is continually at work through our relationships and circumstances to sharpen us, mold us, and make us into what He wants us to be. He sure has a long way to go for us! But we are encouraged knowing that HE WILL complete the work in us that He has started!

Sleeping Beauty

Getting a didgeridoo lesson in Kuranda (a small tourist village north of Cairns). Judah had a fun time with it, but Jordan couldn't get over the fact that other people probably had their mouth on the opening, and he just couldn't do it.

We visited Koala World with Grandma and Grandpa. Apparently the adults were more enamored with their preciousness than the boys were. They did however agree that the koala was the cutest little thing in the world, second only to their baby sister, of course!

Busy, busy, busy! Two days after Alayna Joy arrived, we were thrilled to welcome Jeremiah's parents for a 3week visit. We can't believe the time is almost over! They have been a wonderful help, and have really made recovery and healing for me go much faster! They have been helping Jeremiah pamper me by pitching in with all the house work, dishes, cooking, shopping, entertaining the boys, everything! Thank You Lord, for Grandparents! :-) But we have also been playing tour guides (mostly Jeremiah and the boys, but I've gone on trips as I've felt up to it.) We've been anxious to show them as much of our little corner of Australia as possible before they return to Arizona.

Last week they also watched the boys overnight as Jeremiah and I had to bring Laynie to the US embassy in Sydney to apply for her passport. The amount of paper work and hoops we need to jump through in order to legally take her back to PNG with us is amazing. But, praise the Lord, we are almost there! We are now waiting on the arrival of her passport, which we need in hand before we can apply for her PNG visa. The visa, the last step, is often the most complicated and prolonged item that needs to be processed. Please pray that this would go MIRACULOUSLY smoothly and quickly, so that we can return to PNG - ASAP. Please pray for Jordan and Judah as well. They truly miss their home in Sakam and talk about going back every day. It has been really hard to be here without their friends and any normalcy as they know it. Having Grandma and Grandpa here as play mates these last 2 weeks has been a great help.

April had a really restless night not able to get to sleep, then at 12:30 we understood why. Her water broke and an hour later the contractions hit hard. Praise the Lord that even though my parents aren’t here yet (they will get here on Wednesday), there were some friends with New Tribes staying in town who offered to watch the boys. So we headed to the hospital ready for a long night, but less than 4 hours later we greeted our precious daughter for the first time. The delivery was monumentally fast and she managed to get herself wound up in the umbilical cord in the process. It was wrapped around her shoulders keeping her from proceeding down the birth canal, and I had to prematurely cut the cord. We are praising the Lord that overall Alayna is doing great, even though she had a rough time a couple months ago. Thank you all so much for your prayers, and support on our behalf. We are so grateful for all of you!

I asked him what he was thinking, and he said “I believe Yesu died for me, spilled His blood and saved me from the penalty for my sin. Thank you, Yesu!” He also said, “I still have lots more questions, and I really want to talk more about these things!” I assured him that, yes, we will do much more talking about these things.

THANK YOU FOR PRAYING! God has anwered our prayers in Tobo. Read what happened as our friends, Jason Knapp and Chad Mankins, taught the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jason and Alis this Morning at the Teaching

January 16th will forever be marked in history as the birth of the Tobo church! Tuesday, Jason taught on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. There were many people that came, more than what we were expecting. A large group of people left immediately after the teaching to go get dressed in their traditional clothes to show support for the cargo cult. Yet others stayed around just silently sitting and talking. 2 groups of men formed around Jason and Chad as they pelted each of them with questions. Some were having a hard time believing that Jesus washed ALL their sins away.. if they were to sin again how would they stay righteous before God? Others had worked all their lives to gain God's favor and didn't want to be told that all those years of "works" were for naught. And yet others still didn't want to let go of the Cargo Cult and were looking for some way they could follow both.
Jason and Chad took the rest of the afternoon going to different houses and asking questions and seeing where people are at. We don't know how many are saved, but we do know that there are brothers and sisters in Christ here now. We know of at least 4-5 families who have put their faith in Jesus alone, and we haven't been able to talk to everyone yet. Tragically, there are some who clearly have rejected, and that saddens our hearts. So we ask you to continue to pray as people are still struggling to choose. God is working in people's hearts!
We are VERY excited to tell you that not only did Alis and his family stay back from going to the Cargo Cult meetings; but they are now believers in Jesus Christ! After the teaching on Wednesday, Alis was just sitting there crying, so Jason went to him and just sat with him for a while, and Alis said, "Thank you Jesus." Jason asked, "What are you thankful for?" And Alis said, "I am no longer afraid that I will go to hell, Jesus' blood saved me." Alis is our land owner. To say he has been nothing but a frustration to our team would be an understatement. If we could have picked one person whom we didn't think would get saved it would have been him!:-) Thank God that our thoughts are not His!!!! Alis is very much like a Peter in that he speaks often without thinking first; but there is a definite change in his life these past few days. And we also know that as the Holy Spirit works in his life that others will see the change. In the last week or so, we have been noticing a change in his personality going from a very angry man to almost quiet and humble. Isn't God awesome?!!!!
As God shows us who He has chosen to be His church here in Tobo, we will be sure to share it with you.
Thank you again for your prayers, it is because of your prayers that many of these people have trusted in Jesus as their Savior. In a way the work is just beginning! We have babies in Christ. Pray that God would work through us to disciple these new Christians so that they can someday soon reach the rest of Tobo!

This update is regarding our friends the Knapps and Mankins. They began teaching through the Bible a few months ago in the Lengbati Tribe (one of our closest neighbors) and it has not been without opposition. After years of preparation, prayers and seed planting, they are just about to present the Gospel in full for the first time to these precious people in their own language. Please read their following update and pray with us for the truth of the Gospel to reach their hearts, and that Christ would enable them to make their choice.

Alis and His Family

We were told this week that the followers of the Cargo Cult will be leaving to go to another village on Monday for a "holy day" on Tuesday and Wednesday. They are going in order to worship their leader, do the required rituals, and wait for the cargo (i.e. the bread which perishes) they think is coming. They will be coming back on Thursday and Friday.
Jason went down to our neighbors house and saw that he had his bark loin cloth drying outside on the grass.......
Jason: "I see that you have your bark outside. Are you planning on going? I see you at the teaching ever day and I know you are struggling in your heart, is this the decision you are struggling about?"
Alis: "Yes, I am struggling greatly. On the one hand I am scared of all the other men who want me to keep on believing in this Cargo Cult. But I am also afraid of God who sees all, and I know that if I go and put that loin cloth on and follow them this week, I will be choosing eternity in hell. My insides are split in two. "

So, in light of the facts, we have decided that instead of teaching the gospel next week, we are going to go ahead and present Christ's Arrest this Monday and then His death, burial, and resurrection this Tuesday morning!!!! This is different than what our last update said. Our reasoning for this is that we do not want to "feed our pearls to swine". They will just trample it underfoot, and are not coming for the true bread of life, but for the bread that perishes. And for those who have made the decision to stay back and listen to God's Talk, we feel that they are ready to hear the power of the message: the Gospel of Christ.

Please be on your knees, we NEED your prayers!!!! Pray for the ones "on the fence", pray for the ones who stay back, and pray for fellow Brothers and Sisters to be added to the family of Christ in the next 48 hours.

Thank you for your prayers! Although it was pretty quiet here for us, we truly had a wonderful Christmas Holiday with our little family. Some of the highlights were enjoying a Christmas eve "barbecue" with a local church who has been a blessing to us, going to a "Carol Sing" on the beach, and having a very special day enjoying each other and the Miracle of Christmas. Jesus our Savior has come! Of course, for our rambunctious 5 and 6 year old boys, we had to compete with their new remote control cars for some peaceful time in Bible study! But it was also wonderful to get packages from grandparents to add to the festivity!
We topped off the week with a trip to the coast to watch the boys' first fireworks display. (In respect of families with children, they graciously do the first display at 9 pm here in Cairns!)
In baby news, we are 35 weeks along, finally in the Safe Zone, Praise the Lord! Doctor is still giving us good reports, so the waiting continues. We are so thankful for every strong, healthy kick I feel, every one of them a testimony of God's goodness and grace in sustaining us through the placenta abruption! Thank you all for your parts in holding us before the throne of Grace!

It was great having so many friends at Judah's birthday party even though we were so far from home. Everyone at the party was in Australia for some sort of medical reason.

We, with our team, had been planning primer construction week for months. Our two consultants would fly in and under their supervision we would, with the help of Dinangat friends, prepare the primers for the first literacy class in the Dinangat language. The Lord had other plans. We were med-evac'ed two days before the consultants flew in. We are thankful that we had co-workers there to continue the work without us, although it truly broke our hearts to not be a part of this stage in the ministry.

Today I went back in for a follow up appointment with the doctor here in Australia. He was very happy with the way things looked and we got a pretty positive report. In fact, it looks like the placenta may already be healing. What a Mighty God we serve! We marvel at the way He has designed our bodies to heal and in a sense, “fix themselves”, even in those deep dark places that are very difficult for doctors to be able to do anything about. So, I am feeling very healthy. And although he has definitely banned us from going back to PNG at this point since there is still a pretty good chance of me having another abruption and going into labor immediately, he did officially give us the “O.K.” to travel back to the states, if that’s we wanted to do. He said it would still be a risk, but definitely a reasonable option.
However, after hours and hours of prayer (and we know many of you have been praying for us for wisdom, also) we believe that the Lord would have us just stay put for now. Our hearts of course ache to be able to be with family and friends, but we are at peace with this decision. Even though we will be unexpectedly (to us, not to our Lord!) spending thousands of dollars to stay here in Australia, after crunching the numbers, we would spend more than double that to go home to the states. Since we just returned from furlough in January, it seems too soon to spend that kind of money again. Also, and more importantly than the money factor, we want to remain as close to the tribe as possible. Should our little Bundle of Joy show up early, as is expected, we want to be able to get back into the tribe as quickly as possible, without being locked into a return- ticket date.
Soooo…we are just hunkering down here for now and waiting on Baby. The Lord has graciously pulled everything together for me to be able to home school Jordan while we are here. Our co-workers back in the tribe are sending all the necessary books out here via New Tribes Mission Aviation (NTMA), who fly out here a couple times every month. Such an answer to prayer! We are definitely looking forward to getting into some sort of routine. We also went out today and bought a few little Christmas decorations and are planning on enjoying the Holidays as a family on this great adventure! No, it won’t be the same as being at home surrounded by extended family, or even in our own house in the tribe with our precious co-workers. But the Lord has blessed our family beyond words and we will enjoy HIS PRESENCE and the gift of each other during this special time! God is good, we know we are blessed by Him, and truly, that is all that matters!
Thank you as well for praying for the Smith’s and Schlegel’s back in Dinangat during this busy week of literacy planning and primer construction! They had a very exhausting, but very productive week! There are now currently 4 primers in the Dinangat language, including stories and drawings (done by the Dinangat people!) and we are excited to see this work move ahead! We will send pictures as we receive them! Lord willing, Jeremiah will be receiving some files from Ralf and be able to help get the layouts together for some of the other booklets that will be used in the literacy program.

Med-Evac

Psalm 18:30 says, “As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.” God’s way is perfect, sometimes its different than what we would have chosen or expected, but HIS way is PERFECT. As I unfold this story to you, you will see how this verse has been a comfort to us in the midst of this seeming storm we are passing through.

Friday night April had some stomach pain and bleeding and because we are so far from medical help, it was pretty concerning to us. The next morning we got on the radio and contacted our NTM clinic. The Doctor was not there so we talked to a nurse who told us to have April go to bed and call them back on the radio later that day to give an update on her condition. Since the nurse didn’t seem too concerned, April went to bed and I got to work on Literacy Preparation for our consultants who were coming on Monday to help us put together our Literacy Primers. Well a couple hours later we heard a plane coming in, at first we didn’t think too much about it, but then I realized that it was one of our NTM planes. I went down to the airstrip and the pilot told us to pack our bags because the doctor wanted to check April out at the clinic.

The next hour was pretty hectic as we ran around the house packing our bags, not knowing how long to pack for. The pilot also the pilot told us to pack all our important papers just incase we needed to be med-evac’ed to Australia. So needless to say it was a bit stressful, but soon we were in a plane on our way to Lapilo (our NTM headquarters in PNG). The doctor did some tests and saw that there was a problem with the placenta and that the baby could be in danger. So to make a long story short within a couple hours we were on another NTM plane on our way to Cairns Australia.

The flight to Australia was probably the most difficult flight I’ve ever been on. We left at night in the middle of a thunderstorm, April was strapped to a stretcher, Jordan was in the back of the plane yelling to us asking why it felt like we were falling out of the sky (really bad turbulence). Anyway, after 3 hours we made it to Australia where an ambulance was waiting for April and the boys and I took a taxi to a hotel.

We are still in a daze, but everyone is doing fine. April is still in the hospital and will be there until at least Wednesday, but she is feeling fine, the bleeding has stopped and all the babies signs are healthy and strong. The doctor here in Australia did some tests and found that there was a placenta abruption, meaning the placenta has become partially detached from the uterus. He said that with the size of the abruption he is surprised that Aprils isn’t in a lot of pain, and with this kind of problem, he expected many other complications but as of now are non existent. So we’re praising the Lord for looking after April and the baby.

As it looks now with this kind of risk we won’t be able to go back to PNG until after the baby is born. The doctor here says that there is a 50/50 chance that the placenta could become more detached, causing great distress to the baby. In that case she would need an emergency C-section. April is only 29 weeks along and PNG has no adequate medical facilities for C-sections or pre mature deliveries. So no what? Well since she is stable, the doctor may be able to release April from the hospital in a few days, but we will need to stay next to a big hospital until the baby is born. So the question now is do we want to stay in Australia, in the hotel, for possibly the next 4 months (if baby goes to term), or should we go home to Missouri. The obvious answer is that we would like to go home, but we’re not even sure if she would be safe to travel. Right now we’re just waiting to see how things go in the next few days, to make sure April and the baby are both stable.

Please be praying specifically for:
- Safety for the baby.
- Wisdom for the Doctors.
- For our team, as they continue literacy primer construction.
